Tattoo and its meaning in religion

Tattoo is kind of body art that is well known practice from beginning of human history to present time. Tattooing is process of inserting of colour in the skin. The oldest archaeological evidence of tattooing we can find in mummy body called Ötzi which is almost 5,500 years old, according to radiocarbon dating. The hot spots of tattooing with very long history and lore are Polynesian islands. This thesis is focused on tattoo, its history and ethnography and another aspects and purposes connected with practising of tattooing. And finally is trying to find relationship between tattoo and religion. The first part of the aim is bringing tattoo definition, namely concentrate on its ethnography and distribution. The second one is brief describing main religion and belief systems such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism and their issue with tattooing.

This master thesis focuses on body modifications, mainly tattooing. The aim is to present the tattooing in a broader context and show its link to many aspects of people's lives that was evident especially in traditional tribal societies before the colonization era. The attention is paid to the Maori culture and the Marquesas Islands because their tattoos used to have high art value and formed the inseparable part of the inhabitants' lives. At the same time it describes the up-to-date situation in the western culture, where the body modification is very popular. It also mentions the current tattoo projects happening in the Czech Republic. Information are taken from several books available in Czech, especially the work written by Martin Rychlík "Tetování, skarifikace a jiné zdobení těla" and many electronic books in English. Information about the tattoo and body art news comes from the websites where the interested people meet and write their observations and articles about the present events. The conclusion shows that body modifications and body adornments are as old as a mankind. They appear in all cultures and do not have only the aesthetic function. Czech society and change in the concept of tattooing in the medium term

Anntotation This bachelor thesis deals with the change of perception and reception of tattoo and tattooing in the Czech society over the last aproximatelly thirty years. The turning point was the socio-political revolution in 1990s. The revolution has changed the perception of tattoos in the post-socialistic society and tattooing itself. In this respect, it points to the differences between the Czech Republic and the western Europe which are influenced by dynamic development and the perception of the visual aspect of tattoo changing through time. Contemporary tattoos are confronted with tattoos made by native cultures in parts of this thesis. Such comparison answers following question: Could a tattoo be a rite of passage or a record of an event etc. even today in our culture? The bachelor thesis mentions the problem of subcultures which are sometimes characterised by specific tattoo. To the contrary, tattoo can represent an effort to express one's individuality. Body Art - Tattoo and Piercing in Their Functional and Symbolic Meaning.

The diploma thesis "Body art - the functional and symbolic meanings of tatoo and piercing" focuses on body modifications that are used as body art and which have become fashionable as a cultural and social phenomenon in the contemporary society. First part of the thesis introduces a basic theoretical framework and sets the subject into the context, which the author presents in such a way that even a laic can benefit from the paper. Theoretical part defines the terms and introduces first archeological findings connected with this cultural phenomenon. Further on the paper introduces examples of body art from selected traditional cultures and describes the way, which this phenomenon undertook to the contemporary western society. At the end of the theoretical part categories of functional and symbolic meaning, which the body art can acquire, are introduced. Second part presents qualitative research that focuses on functional and symbolic meanings, that the body art in contemporary society acquires. Body Decoration with the Focus on Jewellery

This thesis focuses on the issue of body decoration, its meaning and function in culture and society. Main interest of this thesis is aimed on jewellery and its field of the visual state. Thesis divides main issue into following points: selection of the main functions of each kind of jewellery, material and technology, world point of view of cultures, main principles of its order, and main thematic fields. At the end of the thesis is briefly sketched changing approach to the genuine author jewellery. Thesis includes examples based on jewellery history accompanied by pictures and drawings. European tradition is stressed throughout all thesis. The thesis aims on the issue of cultural and social background and its influence on visual state of jewellery. The didactical part includes description of the possibilities in the field of pedagogical activity in the field described in the main part of paper.

The thesis is based on the results of theoretical - empirical studies. The aim of my thesis is the primary monitoring of the skills of boys and girls in the pubescent age from the chapters selected from propedeutics. This is an area of tattoos, piercings and intimate hygiene. Keywords: tattoo, piercing, intimate hygiene, boy, girl, health propedeutics, body art, infection. The work consists of several parts. The theoretical part describes the function of tattoos, side effects of application, piercings, intimate hygiene of men and women, the development of children in the age of 12 to 15 years, compulsory school attendance. The practical part analyzes the level of awareness, identifies students' attitudes towards this issue. Analysis are based on questionnaires which I wrote by myself and which were filled in by students of selected schools. Processing is shown in the graphic design. In conclusion, I can certify that the students of secondary schools are better informed than primary school students. Research question ?girls are better informed than boys? was been confirmed.
